Oxidised silver jhumkas are the most forgiving piece of ethnic jewellery you can own. The dark antique finish means they never look too shiny or too new, and they sit comfortably against almost every colour. Here is how to wear them without overthinking it.
Start with the neckline, not the outfit
Jhumkas draw the eye downward. If you are wearing a high neck or a closed collar, larger jhumkas work well because there is nothing competing with them. With a deep or wide neckline, go smaller, or the whole area gets busy.
This is why a leaf or floral jhumka in oxidised silver works with a plain kurta but fights with a heavily embroidered one.
Oxidised silver goes with more than you think
The usual assumption is that oxidised silver belongs only with cotton and handloom. It does look excellent there. But the dark finish also holds up against silk, and it is one of the few metals that does not disappear against a bright saree.
Colours that work particularly well: mustard, deep green, maroon, indigo, black, and any off-white. Colours to be careful with: pale grey and silver-toned fabrics, where the earrings lose definition.
Match the stone, not the metal
If your jhumkas have coloured stones, let the stone do the coordinating. Red stone jhumkas with a maroon or cream outfit. Green stone with mustard or beige. Black stone jhumkas are the safest of all, because black coordinates with everything.
Rainbow AB crystals are the exception. They shift colour as they catch light, so they read as neutral and go with almost anything.
Weight matters more than size
A large jhumka is fine. A heavy one is not, if you are wearing it for eight hours at a wedding. Look for hollow-formed domes rather than solid ones, and check the hook. Most discomfort comes from a thin wire cutting into the lobe, not from the size of the drop.
If you have not worn jhumkas in a while, start with a lighter pair and work up.
Keeping the finish
Oxidised silver is meant to be dark. That dark layer is the design, not tarnish, so do not polish it with silver cleaner or you will strip it back to bright metal.
Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing. Keep them away from perfume, hairspray and sweat where you can, and store them in a pouch rather than loose in a box. That is genuinely the whole routine.
